On the library shelf:

The Time It Takes to Fall: A NovelThe Time It Takes to Fall by Margaret Lazarus Dean

I thought this was a new title, but it's been out about a year and the paperback version will be available in February. A girl's coming-of-age story set in Cape Canaveral, Florida right before the Challenger explosion. I am immediately taken back to 4th period freshman year (Orchestra) when we heard the news and watched the footage. Sometimes the inside flap alone is enough to trigger a vivid memory and cause me to snatch up the book and read it before all others.

So that's what I'm doing. It moved to the front of the line. And just like that all my booklist making organization falls apart. What can I say? I'm weak.

inspiration

When I go through a long spell of reading, I usually am motivated to do something creative. Since I don't have the stamina for writing, I turn to the other paper & words hobby - scrapbooking.

This design was taken from an old scrapjacked challenge. I haven't scrapped in months and this felt really good.  I used vellum as the background in case I decide to frame it - hopefully it will look like it's floating.

I_heart_books

I used to get a little bit depressed when I'd read amazing books. Because I knew, there was no way I could do that. And I thought somehow that loving to READ books meant that I should want to WRITE them. Nope.  But I did find another way to channel my desire to make stuff. For me it's scrapbooking, for you it is....?

beginning, middle, end

a status report:

beginning:  The Sound of Language

middle: The Birth House

end: The Book Thief

I won't be writing any comments about The Book Thief since it is our March online book club pick and I don't want to sway anyone. Just read it. :)

Timing is Everything

Is there a book that you couldn't finish the first time around, but when you picked it up again, found that you LOVED it?

Or a book you absolutely dreaded reading because you were sure it was the equivalent of 11th grade English class all over again, or just plain yucky? (A banner reading year for me, but for others, not so much.)

Which one (s)? Please share. I'm nosy curious.

Mine is Peace Like a River. Had it sitting around for years. Started it once. Almost threw it in the yard sale pile multiple times. Picked it up in 2005 and found it to be my favorite book EVER. Then I made everyone I know read it. And I'm ready to re-read it.

do not be afraid

to talk to me about books.

I love to have books recommended to me. Love it. It's even better if they are books I've never heard of. Here are the latest ones you have discovered for me:

Interred with Their BonesGinger asked me about Interred with Their Bones and I knew nothing about it.  Turns out, it's a mystery that centers around a recently discovered work of Shakespeare. That's really all I need to know. Delightful.

Mrs. MikeJill mentioned Mrs. Mike, which apparently is either a classic or close to it. Again, never heard of it, but I'm game. Solid.

The Madonnas of Leningrad: A Novel (P.S.)Miss Joni recommended Madonnas of Leningrad, which brought up a vague memory, but it turns out to be not what I thought. It's better. So onto the list it goes. Word.

So do not be afraid to talk to me about books. And please don't assume I've read something. Because, I'm only one person, you know?

loveliness

As most of you know, my favorite children's book author is Kate DiCamillo (Because of Winn Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane). Her writing is smart and true, yet gentle. When I was poking around her website I found this:

(from her October 2007 journal entry)

CRY ME A RIVER

My favorite six letter word is
always
because it promises
so much.
My favorite five letter word is
never
because it insists on contradicting
the promise.
My favorite four letter word is
once
because it says it
happened then.

My favorite three letter word is
yes
because I’m just now learning
to say it
to my heart.

My favorite two letter word is
if
because it makes
all things possible
like this:

If not always
If not never
Then once.

Yes.

Might You Need a Miter Saw?

Shop for miter saws at Amazon.com

Find the miter saw to fit all your trim cutting needs at Amazon.com. Our multibrand miter saw selection is huge, with a price range to match any budget.

Saw this on my homepage today.

Oh Amazon, don't you know me? I thought we were friends.

Of all the things I need, this isn't one of them. While I give you credit for being aware (in a bigbrother sort of way) that I do indeed know how to use a miter saw (thanks to Mr. Pruett's 10th grade manufacturing class), what about my profile says that girl wants some new power tools? That is so not on my wishlist.

Phlooey

Well, dear readers, I am sick today. Thankfully it isn't the stomach kind. I'm congested and achy and feverish. Which only means pjs and movies and reading. As long as I'm still, I feel okay.

And I'm exceptional at not moving off the couch.

In that spirit, I finished The Great Expectations School:A Rookie Year in the New Blackboard Jungle by Dan Brown  last night. Comments are on the feed.

On to The Book Thief.

The End.
