1. This post was ready on Tuesday (except for the pictures that won't upload) so we're countin' it.
2. In a toot my little horn moment (more of a recorder, really): I discovered that I have read and reviewed several books on Oprah's Summer Reading List. Including: The Summer We Read Gatsby, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Someone Knows My Name, My Name is Mary Sutter, The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott, The Hundred Foot Journey (coming soon). Considering the list is made by one of my favorite book people - Sara Nelson, O Magazine Books Editor and author of So Many Books, So Little Time (adored it, she gave me permission to leave books unfinished) - I feel sorta special and in the know. Okay, that lasted about ten seconds, onward..
3. While I may not be a diehard fan of Oprah, I am fan of books and people who love them. Hence how cool would it be to work on that booklist? By the way, I am available for 2011...Sara? I have a knack for trendsetting picks...just ask Miji. I'm currently running 2- 3 years ahead. (Surfing/beach decor, the color charcoal, patent leather accessories, and large beaded necklaces ala Wilma Flinstone are just a few of my past predictions).
4. My final entry on the subject of O's summer reading list - the one book I'm completely excited to check out is Charles Dickens' Dombey and Son. (Free on the Kindle, which by the way is now only $189. And worth it at that price, in my opinion.)
5. I recently finished The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti. A book rightfully compared to Dickens, but still unique and oh so wonderful. Ren, a one-handed orphan adopted by a mysterious stranger claiming to be his brother, becomes a rapscallion with a conscience. While coming to terms with his new life, he begins to unravel the secret of his past. Move it up your list and read it quick. :)
6. We had the 1st annual driveway crab feast a couple weekends ago. Sad that we are leaving this wonderful drive - but hopeful we will be invited to the 2nd annual feast next year. By the way - those crabs were sweet and lovely. Many thanks to Evie for going to bed so I could sit and leisurely pick 'em.
7. Are you watching the World Cup? Who's your team? Mine was Argentina. Then it was Germany. I'm currently without a team for the final game. But I suppose I'll go Dutch.
8. I just finished City of Refuge by Tom Piazza. My first post-Katrina themed book and it was a good one. It follows two families - one white, one black - through the nightmare weeks Sometime this year I also plan to read Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. And very soon I'll be reading Simply from Scratch.
9.I've never moved in the summer before and it is kinda nasty here. Code red - high 90s lotsa humidity. It's more than just bad hair days...
10. Back to #2...I am part of a blog tour for The Hundred Foot Journey - my review will post Saturday AND there is an altogether lovely guest blog post by author Richard C. Morais here on Sunday. I would love if you came back to visit.
The End.
