I know Sue Miller has a faithful following, and from what I've read in other reviews, her regular fans are disappointed with this book which may be precisely why I like it.
She does a crafty job of contrasting the life of Delia, the wife of a former senator, with Meri, her newly married neighbor. Delia lives alone, although still married to Tom her charming and oft wayward husband. Meri is fascinated by Delia and yearns to learn more about her poised and reserved neighbor.
Anytime there are two women in a story, it is natural to root for one. I believe the problem so many are having with this book is Delia's love for her husband and willingness to accept their arrangement. While this is cause for uproar among feminist readers, it is more a reflection of real life than found in most contemporary fiction. I completely appreciated this perspective and found her to be a strong character, inspiring and wise rather than annoying. Meri struggles throughout the novel, first with her place as a wife, then in her unexpected pregnancy, and finally as a new mom. We are privy to her thoughts as well, but the contrast to Delia is startling. I found Meri to be shallow and ultimately selfish, able to easily justify her every transgression. The ending shocked me and left me wanting to talk about it. So read it for yourself, and see what you think about the characters and the ending. Then email me. :)
The End.
I think I'll buy this book asap (this weekend? next weekend?) and I'll be sure to email you.
As a side note, you do great reviews. They get me excited about books, if you know what I mean. There's something infectious in the way some people describe a book that makes me want to buy it *right now*.
